Review on Possum

Possum takes place in Europe and features Sean Harris as Philip and Alun Armstrong as Maurice. It was released in 2018 and was directed by Matthew Holness. Philip is a disgraced children's puppeteer who has been having a pretty rough life. He has been haunted with visions from his childhood that scared him as a kid as of recently. Because of these nightmares Philip decides to go back home where he grew up to face his evil stepfather (Maurice) and some hidden secrets of his past. Visions of the possum continuously haunt his mind while traveling across the continent but he soon makes his way back to the old farm where he grew up. During his adolescence he learned the art of puppeteering and became inspired by telling a fictional story with his toys. He would often create poems to go along with his little stories but one rhyme that was told by his stepfather would never escape his mind. Philip soon realizes that this would not be an ordinary visit back home and he is going to have to face his fears found in the house if he wants the visions to cease.

This film definitely had a lot of bright sides and I applaud Matthew Holness for the originality of the script. Throughout the eighty-five minute runtime I was hooked for the most part, but a lot of areas felt bland and dry. This is also one of those films that can be very disturbing to the average consumer since a lot of the cinematography is harrowing shots used to put the viewer in an uncomfortable situation. I would not recommend this if you get uncomfortable easily, but if you are into brutal character studies then this might be for you. For the most part the acting was great from the main cast and the score made the intense scenes even more exhilarating. The design of the "Possum" was also very unique and made it even more scary.

As far as positives that is all I can really give, even though the movie felt original it still didn't do anything "special" in my opinion. The ending was average and kind of predictable and I do believe they could've made it a short film instead of a full length feature. I also believe that I could never bring myself to watch this movie again because like I said, it was pretty disturbing. With most things taken into consideration I rate this movie a 6/10.
